DEVELOPMENT OF THE IRRIGATION SYSTEM IN THE SURKHAN OASIS IN THE BEGINNING OF THE XX CENTURY

The Surkhan-Sherabad oasis is a favorable area for the development of cotton growing. However, due to the complexity of water extraction, cotton growing mainly developed in the upper basin of the Surkhandarya River and in the mountainous regions of the oasis. In the late 19th - early 20th centuries, Russian engineers who studied the water resources of the oasis proved that it is possible to develop cotton growing by extracting water from the Surkhandarya River using modern technology. This article, based on archival materials and scientific literature, describes the work of the Bukhara Emirate and Tsarist Russia on the development of cotton growing and irrigation in the Surkhan-Sherabad oasis.
