Abstract

Chronic colostasis (chronic cologenic constipation) remains one of the most challenging problems in modern coloproctology and abdominal surgery due to its prolonged course, frequent resistance to conservative treatment, and marked variability of functional disorders of the colon. Contemporary surgical management of chronic colostasis requires careful patient selection and a comprehensive preoperative assessment of colonic motor-evacuatory function, as inappropriate selection and incomplete diagnostics are major predictors of unfavorable outcomes. This study summarizes current (2023–2025) evidence on risk factors associated with unsatisfactory surgical results, addresses the prevention of early and late postoperative complications, and proposes a practice-oriented strategy aimed at improving postoperative quality of life based on clinical-functional assessment and principles of evidence-based medicine.
