EFFECTIVENESS OF TREATMENT IN ADULT PATIENTS WITH PARTIAL EDENTULISM USING REMOVABLE PARTIAL DENTURES: A META-ANALYSIS

Objective: To evaluate the clinical effectiveness of using removable partial dentures (RPDs) in adult patients with partial edentulism based on a meta-analysis. Materials and Methods: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Scopus databases covering the period from 2000 to 2024. The meta-analysis included 18 studies involving a total of 1,985 patients. The DerSimonian-Laird random-effects model was applied. Results: RPDs demonstrated significant improvement in masticatory efficiency (SMD: 0.62; 95% CI: 0.39–0.85; p < 0.001) and quality of life (mean OHIP-14 reduction: –9.2 points; 95% CI: –12.1 to –6.3). The complication rate was higher with acrylic dentures. Cast metal (framework) RPDs showed superior clinical and patient-reported outcomes. Conclusion: Cast metal RPDs are preferable when no contraindications exist. Acrylic dentures are recommended for temporary use only.
