Abstract

Cervical tics represent a clinically significant variant of motor tic disorders in childhood. In more severe cases, they may be accompanied by repetitive movements of the head and neck, muscle tension, pain, and functional limitations.

Current understanding of the pathogenesis of tic disorders primarily implicates dysfunction of the cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical circuits and abnormalities in neurotransmitter regulation; however, increasing attention is being paid to the potential involvement of neuronal-glial and immunoinflammatory mechanisms. Accordingly, the assessment of peripheral biomarkers is of interest for identifying additional features of the biological heterogeneity of tic disorders.

Objective: To investigate the clinical and diagnostic features of cervical tics in children, assess neuronal-glial and immunoinflammatory markers, and determine their potential significance in the differential diagnosis of PANS/PANDAS.
