Despite the fact that it is repeatedly addressed by literary scholars, the ideas about the origin of the "short story", its formation as a genre, its development, the principles of renewal, its role and importance in determining the uniqueness of the artist's style have not been embodied. In this article, the opinions about these actual issues are analyzed on the example of the works of the skilled writers Erkin Azam and Khurshid Dostmuhammad, who are the leading representatives of contemporary Uzbek short story writing. Also, the article pays special attention to the impact of the changes in social and political life at the end of the 20th century on the world view of the creator and the fact that this impact is reflected in fiction, which is directly related to the short story genre of Uzbek literature, including the fact that the 80s and 90s of the last century were a period of renewal in the history of Uzbek short stories. and explained on the basis of scientific evidence.
