Proverbs most accurately characterize the lifestyle of people. The use of proverbs in the language decorates speech, makes it more expressive. The topic of the article is very relevant and significant, since this is another reason to remember the ethnographic scientist and talk about the importance of his work. Materials from the collection of V.I. Dal are a very important source for studying the characteristics of the cultural tradition of the Russian people. The article is devoted to the history of the creation and study of the collection of proverbs by V.I. Dal.
