This article analyzes the process of eliminating illiteracy and semi-literacy among the population in the Namangan region in the late 1950s, based on the collections of the State Archive of the Namangan region. Based on official memorandums and reports from 1958, the study reveals statistical discrepancies between statistical agencies and public education departments and examines the specific characteristics of the campaign. Drawing on archival documents, the author scientifically substantiates the reasons for the erroneous recording of many literate specialists as “illiterate” in statistical reports.
