The article is devoted to the analysis of the demographic situation in Turkestan in the middle of the XIX th century. The size and ethnic composition of the population, the dynamics of birth and death rates, as well as the influence of political, economic and natural-climatic factors on demographic processes are considered. Particular attention is paid to the consequences of colonial expansion, internal migrations, changes in the social and economic structure of society. The issues of urbanization, socio-economic stratification and traditional forms of management that determined the features of the demographic development of the region are studied.
