The article highlights the issues of formation and development of the city of Samarkand. The features of the geographical position of the city and the possibility of its development as the second million-plus city of the republic, a major economic, administrative, scientific and cultural center are analyzed. The causes and consequences of the transformation of Samarkand into a million-plus city are determined.
