Desert territories, where 1/5 of the world's population lives, today have 1/3 of all natural resources, supply 1/10 of the world's gross product, 1/3 of livestock production, 1/4 of tourism resources. However, the resource potential of these territories is decreasing due to climate change, land degradation, water salinity, a decrease in biodiversity, an increase in the incidence of diseases and other negative influences. Ways to solve this problem, recognized at the world level, is reflected in 17 goals and 169 tasks of the UN Program for Sustainable Development until 2030 adopted on September 27, 2015. The 15th goal of the Program is aimed precisely "at ... protecting and restoring ecosystems, combating desertification, improving the ecological situation."
It is necessary to clarify the criteria for scientifically grounded assessment from the point of view of sustainable development (SD) at the global level, the geoecological situation prevailing in various ecosystems, zoning, characterizing the identified areas, determining the level of criticality, identifying factors influencing their development, developing and implementing measures to optimize and eliminate the prevailing negative consequences.
