Abstract

Reading plays an important role in learning English. The use of standard and non-standard reading methods is one of the key issues in the methodology of teaching a foreign language.

 The purpose of this article is to analyze some alternative, non-traditional strategies that can be applied in teaching reading skills. The article provides a review of the literature, characterizes reading as a type of speech activity, shows various approaches that can be applied to teaching reading, classification in accordance with various criteria. The theoretical substantiation of the problem of formation of reading skills is given. Particular importance is attached to the peculiarities of using traditional and non-traditional types of reading in the educational process, a definition of phonemics is given and new reading schemes are given. It is emphasized that the perception of the text, the analysis and discussion of characters, actions, the development of communication skills is a priority in the modern method of teaching reading.
