Abstract

The prevalence of obesity in women of childbearing age has been reported from 1.8% to 25.3% [2,5,7]. Statistics on obesity in pregnancy vary from 15% to 38% in different countries over the past decade. Rates among repeat pregnancies have been found to double [1,3,4]. However, over the past few years there has been an increasing trend in pre-pregnancy obesity rates in women of childbearing age[2,7]. Adversely affecting the vital systems activity, obesity increases the risk of abnormal pregnancy, delivery and postpartum period and remains a significant factor in perinatal morbidity and mortality [4,8].
