PHARMACOTHERAPY OF INFANTILE SPASMS IN CHILDREN: VIGABATRIN AND ADRENOCORTICOTROPIC HORMONE

Abstract

Infantile spasms represent a severe form of epilepsy occurring in early childhood and are frequently associated with developmental delay and an unfavorable neurological prognosis. Early diagnosis and timely initiation of treatment play an important role in improving clinical outcomes. At present, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and vigabatrin are widely used as first-line therapies for the management of infantile spasms. However, despite extensive clinical experience, the comparative effectiveness and safety of these treatment approaches remain a subject of ongoing discussion. Analysis of the available literature suggests that both therapeutic approaches play an important role in the management of infantile spasms. Nevertheless, the choice of treatment often depends on the underlying etiology, clinical presentation, and individual patient characteristics. Further research is required to optimize therapeutic strategies for children with this condition.
