Abstract

ABSTRACT

This article argues that some features of a learner's language can be quite surprising if one does not have a general idea of the stages of acquisition of second language features by learners. As we present our second language research findings, we have included a number of learner language examples and additional samples to give you a chance to practice analyzing learner language. Of course, teachers always analyze students' language. They try to determine whether the learners have learned what they have been taught and how well their language matches the target language. But progress cannot always be measured in these terms. Sometimes language acquisition is manifested in a decline in the use of the correct form, based partly on memorization or learning. We observe their use of language, but we develop ways to help them learn more about the knowledge underlying their observable use of language. The ideas are put forward that it is difficult to determine whether the student's current language knowledge is a systematic thing or a separate element learned as a simple piece through simple behavior.

Key words: current language, systematic learning, second language, acquisition, approach, communicate, successfully, native speaker, confusion.
