Abstract

ABSTRACT

This article deals with the problems of theoretical and practical neology of the English language in the late XX - early XXI century. Modern English neology is characterized by the intensive emergence of new words, phrases, and new meanings. At the moment, a problem related to the correct interpretation and appropriate use of these neologisms, has arisen in modern linguistic. The difficulty is related to the parameters of a different nature: the speed of the emergence of a large number of neologisms, the huge thematic variety of new words, their misunderstanding by the older generation, the “viability” of neologism. It was revealed that the most frequent ways of forming English neologisms are: compounding, contraction, affixation. As a result of the analysis of the current state of neology, both theoretical and practical, it was revealed that this problem is relevant today. Many issues related to the interpretation, formation, use of new words, phrases and meanings remain unresolved and need further research.

Keywords: neology, neologism, slangisms, professionalisms, denominative factor, structural approach, etymological approach, semantic lacunae, length of use of neologism, productive ways of forming neologisms.
