USE OF TARGETED DRUGS IN THE TREATMENT OF ACUTE MYELOID LEUKEMIA IN CHILDREN

Current polychemotherapy for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) has reached its limit, achieving complete remission in 73% of patients with AML. Due to high toxicity and the risk of life-threatening complications, further intensification of chemotherapy regimens is impossible. Improving programmatic therapy for AML relies on the clinical application of advances in molecular biology, immunology, and tumor cell cytogenetics. Fundamental research in oncology has enabled the identification of the main stages of leukemia and the development of targeted (molecularly directed) treatments for AML.
