This article provides information on the prevalence of diabetes mellitus and prediabetes, bout the high compatibility of diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular pathology, about the high mortality rate of patients with diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases in the presence of acute and chronic cardiovascular complications. About the important role of glucose and lipotoxicity in the development of carbohydrate metabolism disorders from the stage of prediabetes to type 2 diabetes, the role of hyperglycemia in the development of insulin resistance, atherosclerosis, hypertension, liver and kidney pathology, endothelial dysfunction. About the role of hyper- and hypoglycemia in the development of acute vascular complications - myocardial infarction, stroke, gangrene of the lower extremities; On the protective role of adiponectin as a predictor of type 2 diabetes, on the importance of glycemic control for early detection of carbohydrate metabolism disorders – impaired glucose tolerance and impaired fasting glycemia,about the role of metformin in preventing the transition of prediabetes to type 2 diabetes and heart pathology, about the gluco- and cardioprotective role of modern hypoglycemic drugs.
