Purpose: Study of the functional state of the reproductive system in patients with inactive pituitary adenoma (IPA).
Materials and methods: Data of 325 patients (145 women and 180 men) aged 18 to 70 years with IPA were analyzed, the diagnosis of which is confirmed by clinical, hormonal and imaging examinations.
Results: In the analysis of the state of the sexual system in 33 women with IPA up to the age of 50 , the following groups were identified: 1) patients with oligomenorrhea; 2) patients with secondary amenorrhea; 3) patients with preserved menstrual cycle and no changes in pelvic organs in ultrasound.
The state of the sexual system in men, depending on clinical and hormonal features, was characterized primarily by fading libido. A decrease in libido occurred in patients with normal testosterone (T) in blood serum, and at its concentration above 5 nmol/l. All patients with sexual dysfunction had elevated levels of PRL, which, together with reduced T, likely resulted in sexual dysfunction in men.
Conclusion: Among patients with IPA, 90.2% of all patients of reproductive age suffer from sexual disorders, and the larger the tumor size, the higher the disorder rate. There is a high rate of infertility in both women and men suffering from IPA, which amounted to 69.8 and 53.3% of cases, respectively. The level of gonadotropins may change either upwards or downwards, or may remain within normal values.
