Abstract

Purpose: To identify features of the formation, outcomes and criteria for the severity of injury of fractures of the carpal bones

Methods: In this study, we studied the fractures of the wrist bones in 24 male subjects, aged 15 to 48 years, who received injuries under different circumstances: falls on the flat

The results showed that fractures of the navicular bone predominate in wrist injuries (81.8%). There are four types of fractures, and stable fresh horizontal, semilunar and vertical fractures (A2 type) predominated in our observations, whose origin was caused mainly by blunt force of blunt objects on the hand or by collision of these bones with them. Of 20 cases with navicular fractures, unfavorable outcomes as pseudarthrosis (3) and aseptic necrosis (1) were observed in 4 victims with distant trauma.

Conclusions: Thus, based on the nature and outcome of carpal bone fractures, isolated injuries of these structures, taking into account the duration of impairment for more than 3 weeks to less than 4 months, the severity of injury in 15 victims was classified as medium severity. Severe bodily injury was qualified as grievous in 4 victims with isolated fractures of the navicular bone, complicated by false joints and aseptic necrosis, which resulted in evident violations of the wrist joint function, up to functionally unfavorable position.
