HUMAN QUALITIES AND FAMILY DUTY IN THE TRAGEDY OF HORACE

Pierre Corneille wrote several pays in the spirit of consistent classicism. In his harash tragedy Horace whose action was inspired by one of legends about the ancient Roman past,the unconditional triumph of stern, ungodly patriotism is embodied not only in Horace, but also in his old father. Old Horace is ready to personally execute his son, having heard the deceptive news of his flight from the enemy. At the choice of the Romans, the three Horace brothers will have to fight for the honor of their native city. Curiatius is jealous of the great fate of the Horatis to glorify the homeland or lay down their heads for it-and regrets that with any outcome of the duel he will have to mourn either humiliated Alba or his dead friends. Horace, the embodiment of Poman virtues, does not understand how one can mourn for someone can mourn for the glory of his native country.
