ON COMPARATIVE PHRASEOLOGICAL UNITS AND THEIR ROLE AS INTENSIFIERS IN DISCOURSE

The article is devoted to the determination of the status of comparative phrases in speech either free or phraseological. The traditional approaches based either on grammatical, logical properties, or semantics of the phrases are regarded. The functioning of comparative phraseological units as intensifiers is considered too. The author marked the intensifying effect of given language units. Using the predecessors’ concepts, the author underlines the criteria of phrase reference to phraseological comparative units and describes the mechanism for determination of phraseological nature of phrases, which has the following five stages: to establish reproducibility of the comparative phraseological unit, idiomaticity, syntactic function, figurative nature and integrity as a logic structure. The classification of comparative phraseological units according to thematic markers as well as correspondence in source and target languages while translating are illustrated.
