Abstract

Ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) are the main forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in humans. Despite some shared characteristics, these forms can be differentiated based on genetic predisposition, risk factors, as well as clinical, endoscopic, and histological features. Currently, the etiology of CD and UC remains unknown; however, a range of data indicates that CD and, possibly, UC arise from an overly aggressive immune response directed against normal components of the gut microflora. In everyday practice, invasive tests are sometimes used for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with IBD. The diagnosis of UC is based on clinical signs and findings from radiological and endoscopic examinations. There is a need for the use of non-invasive biomarkers. The relationship between serological markers, genotypes, and clinical phenotypes should deepen our understanding of the pathophysiology of UC.
