Abstract

This article examines the philosophical roots and historical stages of development of the concept of sustainable development. It analyzes the main international initiatives and views of prominent philosophers (Hans Jonas, Vernadsky, Moiseyev, Amartya Sen) that contributed to the formation of the idea of sustainable development. It also highlights not only the ecological, but also the socio-economic aspects of sustainable development, as well as important principles such as the ethics of responsibility and the precautionary principle. Sustainable development is interpreted as a holistic model that combines ecological balance, social justice and human freedoms.
