Abstract

The article presents the results of a prospective comparative study on the effectiveness of using transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) in the complex early rehabilitation of patients who have suffered an ischemic stroke. The study involved 80 patients in the early recovery period (days 10–30). Patients were divided into two groups: the main group (n=40) received standard drug therapy and physical therapy (PT) in combination with a course of tVNS, and the control group (n=40) received only standard treatment. The effectiveness was assessed using the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA), and the Barthel Index. The results of the study showed that the inclusion of tVNS in the rehabilitation program leads to a statistically significant reduction in neurological deficit and more pronounced recovery of motor functions compared to the control group. The obtained data indicate the feasibility of using non-invasive neuromodulation to activate neuroplasticity processes in the early period after a stroke.
