COMPREHENSIVE THERAPY OF VERTEBROBASILAR INSUFFICIENCY USING TRADITIONAL MEDICINE METHODS (ACUPUNCTURE)

The treatment of vertebrobasilar insufficiency (VBI) remains one of the most urgent problems in modern medicine. VBI—a common form of cerebrovascular disorder—represents a reversible ischemia of brain structures supplied by the vertebral and basilar arteries. Because VBI falls within the spectrum of cerebrovascular pathology, management strategies must follow principles of treatment and secondary prevention of cerebrovascular disease, given the risk of progression. To date, there is no convincing evidence that pharmacologic management differs for symptomatic lesions of the carotid versus vertebrobasilar systems. This article presents the results of a prospective randomized study evaluating the clinical and hemodynamic effectiveness of adding acupuncture to the standard treatment regimen for patients with VBI. Pathophysiological mechanisms justifying the use of acupuncture are discussed, an algorithm of comprehensive therapy is proposed, and data on changes in dizziness and vertebrobasilar blood flow are summarized.
